WHY I WROTE A SERIES FOR ASPIRING WRITERS

My writing journey began after I retired from the corporate world, and my first memoir, I am Cancer Free, was published in June 2013.

I was a successful banker, and after I retired from banking, I moved on to insurance, where I excelled. I qualified for the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table six times in a row and gained Life Membership. As I was an MDRT member, I had the privilege to attend the MDRT Conferences abroad. Those opportunities helped me to expand my knowledge in new areas. After my dear death experience with cancer, I wrote, I am Cancer Free. I also wrote four other memoirs, My Life as a Banker, and one about my life after banking, Retirement is Fun.  I travelled extensively on vacations and conferences for many years of my life during my Banking and Insurance careers, and I wrote Travel Memoirs

I compiled and published my father’s memoirs, Memoirs of Dr. A. M. Khan. He was an Educator.

When I wrote my first book in 2013, I was just writing for pleasure. In fact, it was not for pleasure because the book was about my bout with cancer. I wanted to relate my experience with that dreaded disease so that others in similar circumstances could learn from it. I made no effort to do any marketing of the book. I did not realise that although I had written one book, I was a writer, a business manager, marketer, and entrepreneur.

The book sold on its own because of the name, but if I had marketed it properly, I could have obtained a greater amount of sales. I kept on writing. I wrote a few more books, but I was not doing anything to put them into the hands of readers or obtain reviews. I did not even have social media accounts.

One day, I heard my niece talking about Facebook, and I decided to open a Facebook page. I joined several Facebook discussion groups for authors. From the discussions, I realized I needed to advertise my books if I wanted reviews.

I decided to take the easy way out and give up writing. I thought that I was a failure at it. However, I remembered the words of Anthony Robbins in his international bestseller, “Unlimited Power.”

‘There is no such thing as failure. There are only results. Failure is something that is not perceived by people who achieve greatness. They do not dwell on it.’

Another small voice within me reminded me that my motto all my life was, “Never give up.”

I reflected on my life. When things were rough, I never gave up on banking, and I climbed the ladder to success.

In 2014, I wrote Heart-Warming Tales and Stories People Love. Both books are short story collections.  They each received five-star reviews from readers, but I still felt that I needed to write some more exciting stories.

In 2016, an idea for a science fiction series came to me, and in February 2016, I published Zeeka and the Zombies: Revenge of Zeeka Book 1. Within a few months, I released Zeeka’s Child Book 2 and Zeeka Returns Book 3.

I had compiled the first three books into a trilogy called Revenge of Zeeka: Horror Trilogy. In September 2016, I submitted the trilogy to Reader’s Favorite for a free review. The book received a five-star review and a five-star seal.

In 2017, I added two more books to the series - Zeeka’s Ghost Book 4 and Resurrection Book 5. I compiled the five books into one book called Zeeka Chronicles

I sent Zeeka Chronicles to Reader’s Favorite International, and it received a five-star review and five-star seal. In September 2017, the book won an award in the Best Science Fiction category of the SIBA Awards.

Because of the many successes that I achieved in 2017, I decided to write How to Write for Success as a guide for new authors.

In that book, which I published on my birthday, 1st December 2017, I explained the steps I took to become a better writer.

I had a burning desire to share my knowledge with new writers.

I believe that mistakes are stepping-stones to success.

The book covers how to plan a story, draft the plot, write narrative and dialogue, build characters, build a story world, and do the nitty-gritty stuff before and after you publish your book. I also delved into how to market the book, get sales, and reviews, and gave a practical example of how to publish a book. When these salient matters are clear in your mind, you can feel comfortable starting your writing journey. The book received a five-star review from Reader’s Favorite International.

In 2018, I was elated to receive the gold award for Zeeka Chronicles in the Science Fiction category of the Emagazine Reader’s Choice Awards. The book also placed in the top ten finalists for the Author Academy Global Awards.

In 2018, I received the best news. Zeeka Chronicles won an award in the Reader’s Favorite International Book Awards 2018, in the category of young adult, and I am Cancer Free won an award in the category of Health and Fitness at the same award function. It was a double celebration.

I travelled to Miami to receive those awards.

In 2018, Memoirs of Dr. A.M. Khan: Journey of an Educator received four five-star reviews from Reader’s Favorite International.

I continued to receive awards for Stories People Love, How to Write for Success, and Zeeka Chronicles.

I also wrote Volume II of How to Write for Success, which focuses not only on publishing and marketing, but on writing characters, writing for kids, memoirs, and fiction.  Self-Publishing Tips is the third in the How to Write for Success three-book series, and a simple guide for new and aspiring authors who want to be independent and learn the art of self-publishing.

To date, I have published 68 books, 68 audiobooks spanning various genres, including science fiction, memoir, horror, mystery, romance, self-help, poetry, children's books, anthologies, magazines, and three screenplays for my sci-fi, horror, and romance novels.

My horror screenplay for Zeeka and the Zombies II was selected as a finalist in the 13Horror-com Film & Screenplay Contest in September 2025.

My romance/mystery screenplay, The Gift of Love, was selected in the Quarterfinals Stage 32 + DramaBox Screenwriting Competition in April 2026.

BOOKS ON PEACE IN A CHAOTIC WORLD

BOOKS ON PEACE IN A CHAOTIC WORLD

Books on Peace in a Chaotic World
We all dream of living in a peaceful world
When we have inner peace, only then can we live in peace with other people.
When we live peacefully in our families, with neighbours, in our cities, and in our society, then can we transmit peace to neighbouring countries and beyond.
It is not possible to change everything in the world, but if our hearts and minds are focused on peaceful things we will achieve peace around us.
We can achieve inner peace by spending time with nature, meditating, giving thanks, and taking responsibility for our actions.
Never let mistakes discourage you. Declutter your mind and your space. Be content whatever your situation. Never give up, love yourself, and honour and praise God daily for your blessings.
Both books, PEACE BEGINS WITH US and CREATING A BETTER WORLD, contain Poetic Verses on Peace, Love, and Humanity, written by 148 international poets. Their poetry establishes the fact that peace isn’t far away but nearer than we think. The verses ignite the light that hovers around several areas in our daily lives, calling for the signature of peace to be appended for the advancement of humanity.
These books should form part of your home library.

HOW TO WRITE FOR SUCCESS

HOW TO WRITE FOR SUCCESS

STRUGGLING TO FIND A PUBLISHER FOR YOUR DEBUT BOOK?
No longer HOW TO WRITE FOR SUCCESS remains a question that is unanswered for many.
The book written by BRENDA MOHAMMED, inspired the author to establish a Literary forum with three sub-forums and growing membership.
This bestselling book received a five-star review from Readers Favorite one month after it was published in December 2017.
In August 2019 it topped all the books in the Non-Fiction category of Connections Emagazine Readers' Choice awards and won the gold medal in the category of non-fiction.

It also placed second in all categories and won the silver medal. The irony of this was that Brenda's romance novel, 'Stories People Love,' placed first in all categories and won the gold medal.

The merits of the book HOW TO WRITE FOR SUCCESS were featured in a review in the Ethiopian Herald Sunday Edition on February 16th, 2020.
EXTRACT OF READERS’ FAVORITE REVIEW
“If you are now getting into writing read this book before you begin. The ideas generated will be of great help to you as Brenda uses her own experiences as she said, from her trials and errors in her writing journey. You will learn a lot from the Questions and Answers Segment of the book. I did.
The courage and creativity of writing a book are only surpassed by the eager willingness of those more experienced than we to take the time to offer their wisdom.
I say to all who have something to say, if you aspire to say it, then say it well, but take the time to learn from others who have not only experienced success but are willing to teach.
This book offers such valuable information for all of us experienced or not!
Thank you, Brenda!”

HOW TO CRAFT AN EFFECTIVE BIOGRAPHY

CRAFTING AN EFFECTIVE AUTHOR BIO

If you’re a writer with few publication credits, or none at all, crafting a compelling bio can be challenging. Don’t worry. You do not need stellar credits to have a great bio.

A BIOGRAPHY MUST BE WRITTEN IN THE THIRD PERSON.

The most effective online bios are both professional and concise. Here’s how to write a short bio that suits your website or brand:

01. Introduce yourself

Begin your bio by stating your first, last name, and your country. If you’re writing in the third person, these should be the first two words of the paragraph. This makes your name easy for your audience to identify and remember.

02. State your company or brand name

Think about whether you want your bio to represent yourself on a personal level, or whether you’d like it to come across as more professional. If you have a personal brand or business - for example, a blog, freelance business or ecommerce site - be sure to mention your brand name at the beginning of your bio. Don’t be afraid if the name sounds simple or redundant. It’s perfectly fine, for instance, to say Mary Smith of Trinidad and Tobago is the founder and CEO of Smith Digital.

Likewise, feel free to mention the name of another company or brand that you work for if you’d like to associate it with your professional accomplishments - e.g., Mary Smith of Trinidad and Tobago is a consultant at Google and the founder and CEO of Smith Digital.

03. Explain your professional role

Next, briefly explain your current position. This is relevant whether you’re the founder of a company, a high-level specialist or a beginner in your field, and it can be similar to the description you have on your resume. Your website visitors won’t necessarily know what your job involves, so elaborating on your primary responsibilities helps paint a picture of who you are and what you have to offer.

Present yourself in a polite, and professional way.

Don’t pad your bio with irrelevant info.

Most editors and readers love the opportunity to discover new writers with unique voices. It does not matter how many publications you have, as long as your writing is strong. Your bio can be as short as a few sentences that mention the country you live in and your profession.

Establish expertise. You will want your bio to influence people to read your work. If the main character in your book has a trait or hobby that you happen to share, or the story takes place in a setting you know like the back of your hand, your expertise will lend your work authenticity. For example, if you write a book that takes place in a bank, it would be a good idea to mention that you’ve worked in a bank for years.

Show that you take your writing seriously. Even though you may not have published any books before, you can show your dedication to writing by mentioning popular writing groups or organizations of which you’re a member.

Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. No one wants to read a long-winded version of your life story. Avoid clichĆ©s like “It’s always been my dream to be a writer” or “I’ve been writing since I was three years old.”

SELF PUBLISHING WITH BRENDA MOHAMMED - PREPARING YOUR MANUSCRIPT

PREPARING YOUR MANUSCRIPT

If you are publishing a poetry book, to prepare your Manuscript, compile all of your poems in a Word Document with one poem on each page. Choose a suitable font.

I use Arial.

Some poems may be longer and may take more than one page, but that is okay.

You can also use a short quote above each poem, and an image for each poem. To insert images, make sure they are saved on your computer and use the Insert button for pictures in Microsoft word. To resize the image to fit the page, use the Format button.

Make sure that your Word document is formatted exactly the way you want.

Check your page breaks, line and paragraph breaks, title page, and perhaps chapter titles if you have them. These might be your poem titles, if it is a poetry book.

If you are using Microsoft Word, follow all instructions at the top for Design, Layout, References, Table of Contents, etc.

In Design, you will select a theme, font, spacing, etc.

With respect to Layout, here is where you choose the book size, margins, and indentations.

In References, you select Table of Contents. Readers love a clickable Table of Contents in the EBook Format.

To design the Table of Contents is a bit tricky, but it is worth your reputation as a reputable writer, to provide one for your readers. Some writers omit this important feature from their eBooks, and lose future sales.

Highlight the headings one by one. If it is a poetry book, the headings will be Poem titles.

Right click on Heading 1 at the top. Click on Modify. Right click again on Update Heading 1 to match selection.

After you have done that for all Headings, go to the first page where you want to insert the table, click on Reference, and then Table of Contents.

Your clickable table will appear.

Page numbers will not work with an eBook, so do not insert them.

You should insert page numbers in the Print book.

Do not include anything in either the headers or footers.

Save your document in .docx format.

That is your Manuscript.

For any other type of book, follow the same procedure.

When you publish on Amazon, use Amazon Kindle Create. You can download the App free.

With Amazon Kindle Create you can highlight your headings, sub-titles, and resize and reposition images too. The result will be a beautiful eBook that your readers will love.

To publish a paperback book, insert the page numbers and convert your manuscript into a PDF, ensuring that all Chapters start on a new page.

There are many videos on YouTube that show you how to publish EBooks and Paperback books on Amazon, step by step.

In another lesson I will give you links for videos.

SELFPUBLISHING WITH BRENDA MOHAMMED

SELFPUBLISHING WITH BRENDA MOHAMMED

BENEFITS OF SELF- PUBLISHING
Dear Friends,
Let's explore the benefits of self-publishing.
I have self-published 50 books to date, and if I tell you it was easy to do so, I would not be telling the truth.
With each book there were new challenges, but I learned something each time.
What I can tell you, is when you learn to publish your own books, you not only save a lot of money, but you become self-sufficient.
The benefit of self-publishing is, there are no literary agents or publishers standing in your way. This allows for diversity to flourish.
There are no contracts to sign and you are free to make changes to your book at any time, without paying fees.
Not only are the barriers to entry lower, but the royalties are higher. When you work with a traditional publisher, they have to take their cut. By self-publishing your own book, you can earn more for each book that you sell.
When you self-publish, you own your work and have complete control over the publishing process. For a lot of authors who have poured their hearts and souls into writing a book, it’s very important for them to have power to make decisions throughout the publishing process.
As technology has improved, self-published authors now have access to high-quality printing and book distribution networks similar to traditionally published authors. Your self-published book will look like the other books on the pages of Amazon.
If you are considering publishing a book of poetry or even a fiction novel, let us look at the steps to get your book in front of readers.
1. Preparing a Manuscript
2. Choosing a Book Title
3. Editing your Manuscript
4. Importance of a Book Cover
5 Crafting an Effective Author Bio
6. Writing a book description.
7. What is Meta Data?
8. Copyright your Work
9. Pricing your Book
10. Create an account on Amazon KDP
11. Publishing on Amazon.
12. The Publishing Process
13. Marketing and Distribution
14. Book Launch
15. Author Events
16. Publishing on Draft 2 Digital
17. Recommended Reading
These steps may seem difficult at first glance.
If you are serious about learning to publish like a pro, get my books on Amazon.
